Singapore Heartlands Unite for Earth Hour 2009
- Over 1,200 youth volunteers reach out to 30,000 households

On March 28, 2009, ECO Singapore, the leading youth social enterprise advocating sustainable lifestyles for youths, will again support WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in Singapore for the highly successful annual Earth Hour event. For one hour starting from 8:30pm, commercial entities and residential households around the island will power down their lighting collectively, drawing attention to the extent of energy that actually goes into superfluous lighting.

In 2008, ECO Singapore organised the first community Earth Hour event in Singapore at Punggol Community Club, engaging around 10,000 households in the area door to door through the efforts of more than 300 student volunteers. Residents were then invited to a community event held at Punggol Community Club.

For 2009, the occasion will be celebrated simultaneously at five locations: a downtown event at the Esplanade and four community events in the heartlands supported by community organisations like Community Development Councils (CDCs) and schools.

ECO Singapore will be co-organising the event at the Esplanade and the main organiser of all the four heartland community events – one in each district. At each location, youth volunteers will engage households door to door to amplify the energy conservation message and share tips on saving electricity. Highlights at these community locations include cultural performances and screenings of environmentally related movies and messages. A total of more than 1,200 student volunteers will be educated on energy conservation and trained to engage the residents. The aim is to engage about 30,000 households in total.

Corporate sponsors and partners for the community events include Starbucks, NEC and City Development Ltd (CDL), and Discovery Channel and Northwest, Southwest and Southeast Community Development Councils.

For the past couple of months, the team has been hard at work making 2009’s Earth Hour @ Heartlands Singapore’s biggest Earth Hour event yet!

While we iron out the details, here’s what we’ve been up to:

EARTH HOUR @ HEARTLANDS
Look out for your friendly neighbourhood student volunteers as they visit your homes to spread the Earth Hour message. On Sat 28 March, there’ll be programmes aplenty with performances and screenings in 4 different estates in Singapore – stay tuned for details.

EARTH HOUR @ THE BAY
This year, we’re expanding beyond the heartlands, with a countdown carnival near the Singapore River. There’ll be exhibitions, performances, games and as a finale, witness the Singapore skyline’s first ever large scale lights-off participation in this 3-year old global event.

We had our very first meeting for Earth Hour 09 at ECOsphere today. The attendance was good. We started off with introductions, briefing about the programme this year and then we were separated into two groups to brainstorm for ideas. The ideas which the committee came up with was pretty impressive. This is an advantage of teamwork where two heads think better than one. Due to the different backgrounds that we come from, the ideas were diverse and creative. The group members build on each others' ideas and through this, feel more committed as their ideas are valued and they are involved in making a final decision. We managed to select a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary to head this national project. Committees were formed too. Everyone was happy. Meeting minutes, contact list and agenda for the next meeting will be sent out soon.

You will be expected to have meetings at least once a month and as the date draws nearer, twice a month and during the last one month, weekly meeting will be held. And depending on the need, we might have to meet up several times a week.

Commitment Period (minimum):
Eight full months (August 08 to April 09 End)

- Able to commit to the full period of eight months
- Must go thru ECO Singapore's Volunteer Induction Programme (Held on the 3rd Sat of every month)
- Have a heart for the environment!

Invitation to National Youth Environment Forum 2008 - Beyond Awareness

An opportunity to take action beyond just turning off the lights at national level.

Organised by ECO Singapore, the bi-annual National Youth Environment Forum (NYEF) is a platform for youths, age 17-35, to voice out their opinion on environmental issues to the relevant agencies and also explore options to address them. Participants will spend a day mingling with experts, activists, NGOs and other individuals who are keen to make a positive difference to our Earth. This will give them a greater perspective on different aspects on the environmental issue, which will allow for more comprehensive solutions to emerge.

This year, with the theme 'Beyond Awareness', participants will learn how environmental issues is interconnected and affected by actions on legislation, business, technology, social attitude and media. At the end of the forum, participants will produce a paper of concerns and policies which they hope to see improve on the environment, which will be submitted to the relevant ministries and corporate partners.

Aside from the forum providing an educational and interactive platform for youth to voice their environmental concerns, participants are expected to come up with an action plan to carry out proposed solutions to be carried with the support and partnership with a relevant NGO, special interest group or educational institution.

Dear All,

Thank you for being part of Earth Hour (Singapore). The night has made a difference in Singapore. It was a start and all of you who have participated have helped be the seed of growth for this event to carry out next year.

Thou the symbolic event has come to the end for 2008, it does not have to stop. The intend of this event is to inspire the rest of us that what we can do collectively in just one simple action. Imagine what we can achieve together when everyone of us take own the responsibility to take action in our daily life to be more conscious in our electricity usage.

Moving on, in your respective fields, you can continue to do your own part because we do not need to wait for the government to make the change or implement a system to make us change. The ability to change really lies in every single one of us.

Here are three simple things you can do:
1. Remember to use electricity wisely.
- Tips can be found on this blog
2. Remind others to do the same.
- Start making changes with friends around you.
3. Help around.
- Even thou it is not yours, help turn off those not in use.

For those who still hold the flare, please do continue to hold your mini Earth Hour in your own company, schools or community and drop us an update. We will be glad to update it on the website.

- the school website will have an announcement invite students visit the S'pore blog on Earth Hour which I will highlight in my speech.
- the class form teachers will be instructed (through e-mail) to remind their form class students to light off just before 8pm on 29th March. My school has a relay system to pass information to all students from the form teacher through class committee leaders.
- Last but not least, the school will set up a forum in their edulearn website to invite students to discuss about the Earth Hour and views on climate change.

Useful Information:
This site is located between CarPark C4 and CarPark D1 of East Coast Park. Also in between these two carpark locations is an overhead bridge connecting to the opposite inland side of the expressway where Victoria Junior College and Katong Convent School is nearby. There is also a bustop opposite each of the carparks with Bus Service 401.

This bus service heading towards the west direction arrives with the following times on Saturday:
1742, 1808, 1835, 1857, 1919, 1939, 1959, 2017, 2037, 2057, 2114, 2134, 2154, 2214hrs (times are approximate). Basically the last bus leaves at 2214hrs. Those coming by car can park at either C4 or D1 and just head towards the shoreline, you will be able to see the site. Additionally, the inland direction from the perspective of the site will meet a big canal. Those coming by public transport can also take buses (for example: that arrives at VJC. Also do note that there are two restrooms nearby and several pavillions to seek shelter just in case of sudden bad weather.

PLEASE NOTE THE ABOVE EVENT IS STRICTLY WEATHER DEPENDENT. IN CASE OF RAIN, THE EVENT WILL BE HELD AT MARINE PARADE COMMUNITY BUILDING IF IT RAINS OR SHOWS SIGN OF ABSOLUTE NO CLEARING.

The monthly green drinks session will be held in conjunction with Earth Hour (Singapore) Grassroots movement.

Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up for a beer at informal sessions known as Green Drinks.

We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made welcome. Just say, "are you green?" and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network.

These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. It's a force for the good and we'd like to help it spread to other cities.

Also, enjoy an evening under the stars at HardBoiled Magazine Office!

HardBoiled Magazine will also be doing their launch on the same day for their 2nd episode that focuses on the Environment!

On the 29th March 2008 from 8pm to 9pm, cities across the world will turn off their lights, supporting the Earth Hour 2008 campaign by World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This will send a powerful global message that collectively, we can take action on global warming. Earth Hour aims to reach out to individuals, spreading the word of Earth Hour to all.

The collective action that everyone will be taking is to turn off their lights on 29th March 2008 from 8pm to 9pm local time.

Taking Action on Earth Hour

Scheduled an appointment today with WWF Singapore office to talk more about EARTH Hour and how we can assist to do it in Singapore.

Met up with Amy Ho and Resy Arts. They shared their opinions about the movement and was glad to have us on board to help run this campaign that focuses on the grassroots. We will just need to have them vet through the email content before we sent out to prevent any miscommunication.

In principal, they have agreed to allow us to run the grassroots movement. We will be targeting at doing something simple for a start, for this year. Our intend is to do the following:
- Setup an online blog for the local grassroots who are interested to be part of it
- Use this blog as a medium to get participation and also act as a web information to the public on Earth Hour every year.
- Send out emails to Schools, Corporate partners, Residential Committees, Community Clubs and Community Development Councils to inform them about Earth Hour an dhow they can do something about it and how they can participate in it.

It was good to go and WWF is supportive of this grassroot lead initiative.

There are also plan to work on one for 2009 Singapore Earth Hour after this year's given more time on our end to plan it.

Surfed the website and learned about Earth Hour.

Felt that it was a great initiative but realized that Singapore wasn't included. Hence, this triggered us to do something about it. We really hope and want to be part of this global initiative because is something that can be easily done and everyone can do something about it for a start.

Imagine the impact that it will give out to the public!

One small action goes a long way and collectively, we have the capacity to effect change to combat global warming.

So we followed up and scheduled for a meeting with WWF Singapore office to find out more and how we may be of collaboration with them in this global initiative.
